The eagerly awaited derby game between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe last night at Rams Park in Istanbul ended goalless, leaving lovers of good football with a bitter taste in their mouths. They had to make do with a bland game in which the most exciting moment was seeing Mauro Icardi waving to the fans in the stadium, where he was accompanied from the stands by the Spanish player Álvaro Morata, who is still recovering from injury.
Although Galatasaray dominated for large parts of the game while Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe showed little ambition and preferred to wait for their opponents to make the counter-attack, Okan Buruk’s team failed to take advantage of their dominance and convert their chances.
The match took place in a strange atmosphere, with the game officiated by an international referee – the Slovenian Slavko Vinčić – due to Fener’s accusations that the referees favour the Lions. Even so, the match was not free of controversy: Galatasaray claimed two possible penalties on Osimhen and for a handball by Okan Aydın, while the referee disallowed a goal for Fenerbahçe.
A disallowed goal and a missed penalty
The first chance for Fenerbahçe came just five minutes into the game, when a cross from Serbian midfielder Kostić from the left wing bounced off the Galatasaray defence and ended up in front of Nesyri, who shot over. Fourteen minutes into the game, Fenerbahçe scored a goal with a shot by Oğuz Aydın following a clearance by Muslera, but the referee disallowed the goal on the grounds that there had been a foul on the Uruguayan goalkeeper.
In the 33rd minute, during an attacking move by Galatasaray, Osimhen was brought down on the edge of the six-yard box as he tried to finish a cross from Barış Alper in front of the goal. Although the Nigerian striker insistently claimed a penalty, the referee ignored him and let the game continue as if nothing had happened.
In the second half, just 4 minutes in, Barış Alper and Osimhen were again involved in a play in which the Nigerian just failed to connect with his header by centimetres, possibly missing out on one of the best opportunities Galatasaray had in the whole match. A few minutes later, the referee had to stop the match due to the launch of flares from the stands where Fenerbahçe fans were concentrated; play continued shortly after, but the scoreboard remained unchanged until the final whistle.
The result of the derby and the sharing of the points leaves things as they were in the Turkish league, with Galatasaray leading the table with a 6-point advantage over Fenerbahçe, and 64 points in total. The draw also ended the run of 4 consecutive victories for the team managed by Okan Buruk, who nevertheless remains unbeaten this season.
