Galatasaray managed to win in the last minute of last night’s game in Rize, thus earning the 3 points they needed to maintain their current lead over their nearest pursuer, Fenerbahçe, and remain leaders of the Turkish league and the only unbeaten team this season. A victory made possible thanks to the goals of Victor Osimhen, in a match in which the Spanish Álvarato Morata was absent.
Although the Istanbul team dominated possession, the match was quite even in terms of scoring chances and the first goal did not come until the beginning of the second half, when the Nigerian striker scored to make it 0-1 with a header. Just 8 minutes later (54th minute) Ali Sowe was lucky enough to receive a pass from Babajide in front of the goal; Sowe didn’t think twice and, with Muslera on one side and the goal clear, he only had to touch the ball in to achieve the equaliser in the Çaykur Didi stadium in Rize.
During the remaining time, both teams tried unsuccessfully to increase the difference on the scoreboard, until, with only 4 minutes left in the 90 minutes of regulation time, Osimhen reappeared on a corner kick to head in a ball that went in tight to the crossbar, thus achieving victory for the team led by Okan Buruk and already scoring 19 goals wearing the Galatasaray shirt.
With this result Galatasaray has 63 points and remain leader, 6 points ahead of Fenerbahçe, who comfortably beat Kasımpaşa 3-1 on Sunday and who will face the Lions in the Istanbul derby next Monday.
Worth noting is the absence of Álvaro Morata, who was not called up due to a grade 2 injury to his left thigh from which he is recovering and which will probably also prevent him from playing in the second leg of the Europa League against AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands, so he is also a doubt for the Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derby. The Spanish striker has not got off to a good start in the Turkish Süper Lig: he barely played in his first match, and in last week’s match Demirspor abandoned the game after 30 minutes in protest at the referee’s performance.
