Galatasaray beat Liverpool 1-0 at Rams Park in Istanbul thanks to a 16th-minute penalty from Victor Osimhen in a hard-fought UEFA Champions League group stage match on matchday two.
The goal came in the first half after a foul inside the box on Baris Alper Yilmaz in the 14th minute was awarded a penalty by the referee. Osimhen took responsibility for the penalty and fired home from the spot, scoring the winning goal.
Liverpool looked for a comeback with insistence throughout the match, creating several dangerous chances on goal. But the Turkish side, backed by the 51,160 fans in the stands, held firm throughout the match, resisting the onslaught of the Premier League champions. The clearest chance for Arne Slot‘s side came in the 90th minute, when the English team thought they had a chance to level the scores after a Wilfried Singo foul inside the box was flagged as a penalty by the referee; the referee’s initial decision was, however, overturned after a VAR review.
Liverpool leave Istanbul with two players injured
To make matters worse for Liverpool, the match left them with two significant absentees. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker suffered an injury and was replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili in the 56th minute. Later, in the 68th minute, Ekitiké was also substituted due to physical discomfort.
The win gives Galatasaray their first three points in this edition of the Champions League after a 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in their group opener on 18 September, and their first European win after a run of seven games without a win in continental competitions.
