Cappadocia surpasses 750,000 balloon tourist rides, celebrates Chinese New Year

In Cappadocia, one of Turkey’s top tourist destinations, hot air balloon rides once again filled the skies during 2025, carrying hundreds of thousands of tourists over the breathtaking valleys and fairy chimneys of this UNESCO World Heritage Anatolian region, which this year also joined in the celebrations for the Chinese New Year.

According to data released by the İHA news agency, last year 223 days of balloon flights took place in the skies over Cappadocia, with a total of 29,479 take-offs and 754,098 domestic and foreign tourists flying on board. Although the number of flight days and take-offs was slightly lower than in the previous year – in 2024, with more favourable weather conditions, 236 days were flown, with 31,851 take-offs and 769,814 passengers – the volume of passengers remained above 750,000, which is evidence that tourism in Cappadocia continues to enjoy very good health.

The difference in the figures is that balloon tours in Cappadocia are not available on a daily basis. Take-offs depend on permission from the civil aviation authorities and weather criteria such as wind speed, visibility, precipitation, fog or thermal air movements. For example, if the wind exceeds the safety limits, balloon take-offs are prohibited, which means that – contrary to general belief – flights do not take place all year round, but only on days considered safe.

Tourism industry representatives say that if demand continues to grow – especially from the Asian market – new tourist records could be set in the coming years. Thanks to its natural and cultural heritage, Cappadocia maintains its position as the world’s leading destination for hot air balloon tourism.

Cappadocia hosts Chinese ‘Year of the Horse’ events

Meanwhile, the region continues its tourism promotion activities and hosted the opening ceremony of the Chinese Year of the Horse celebrations this weekend. Organised by the Cappadocia Regional Tourism Directorate, the event was attended by – among others – Turkish Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Gökhan Yazgı, Governor of Nevşehir Ali Fidan, Chinese Ambassador to Ankara Jiang Xuebin, and numerous district mayors and provincial representatives, as well as of course a large number of tourists and Turkish citizens.

Addressing the audience to introduce the event, Yazgı said that in 2024 more than 425,000 Chinese tourists visited Turkey and that, in the medium term, the goal is to reach the figure of one million tourists from China: “As of 2 January 2026, visa-free travel for Chinese citizens has been granted. This step is a reflection of the historic friendship dating back to the Silk Road. The number of weekly flights to China has been increased from 21 to 49,” said the Turkish representative, who also announced that Cappadocia will host themed festivals and cultural and artistic activities on the occasion of the “Year of the Horse”, Turkish news agency DHA reported.

Ambassador Jiang Xuebin stressed that the ‘Spring Festival’, a traditional Chinese celebration, is not only a time for family reunion, but also embodies the Chinese values of peace, harmony and concord, as well as reflecting universal principles such as harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

“Turkey’s visa exemption for Chinese tourists has created more favourable conditions for mobility between the two countries and clearly demonstrates Türkiye’s willingness to strengthen interaction and cooperation with China,” he said. As part of the celebrations during the festival, a drone light show was organised over the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, which was enthusiastically received by the entire audience.
