Turkish Airlines announced the launch of new flights to Urumqi, a city located in northwest China and capital of the autonomous region of Xinjiang (where the Uyghur minority lives), thus expanding its network of connections in order to promote trade and tourism with the Asian giant.
The Turkish airline announced that it will begin operating scheduled flights to this destination in the People’s Republic of China in a statement published on 10 February on the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) for the Istanbul Stock Exchange, which was echoed by several Turkish media. In the official statement, the airline said that “the Board of Directors of our company has decided to start scheduled flights to Urumqi in the People’s Republic of China based on available resources and market conditions”, without giving details of specific dates for the start of operations.
With the addition of the new route to Urumqi, Turkish Airlines’ network of destinations in China continues to grow and seeks to strengthen both tourism and business relations, especially following the recent visa exemption agreement for Chinese tourists, which allows visitors from China to stay in Turkey for up to 3 months for tourism purposes with an ordinary passport, without the need to initiate visa procedures.
Turkish Airlines is among the world’s largest airlines and carries more than 85 million passengers annually and moves 2 million tonnes of cargo through its subsidiary Turkish Cargo. The company’s CEO, Bilal Ekşi, has stated that the company’s goal is to be among the world’s largest airlines by 2033, when its fleet is expected to reach 813 aircraft. Currently, its fleet consists of 522 aircraft.
In December 2024, Turkish Airlines already set a Guinness World Record by officially becoming the airline that connects the most countries in the world, with a total of 131. Currently, Turkish Airlines flies to four passenger destinations in China: Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Xi’an.
