Turkish Airlines is set to become one of the world’s Big 4 airlines in the next 10 years, a period in which its fleet will grow to 810 aircraft, the Turkish airline’s chairman of the board Ahmet Bolat has said, adding that the number of employees – which in 20 years has grown from 10,000 to 94,000 – will grow in 10 years to 150,000.
In statements reported by Turkish media, Bolat recalled that in 2005 Turkey’s flagship airline had only 65 aircraft and was regarded by its major European rivals as a kind of ‘boutique airline’ aimed at tourists. ‘In a situation where other airlines in the world were growing at an average rate of 3.5% or 4%, Turkish Airlines has grown at 12% in the last 20 years. Today we have about 470 aircraft,’ commented the airline’s president.
Bolat noted that Turkish Airlines’ direct revenues in 2023 totalled $21 billion, while its exports exceeded $16 billion, of which $8 billion stayed in Turkey. Today the state-owned Turkish airline carries 90 million passengers a year and flies to 341 destinations around the world, and is ‘a huge company that contributes to 21% of the Turkish economy by itself’.
