As part of its strategy of self-sufficiency in railway technology, Turkey plans to put into service next year nine electric trains capable of reaching 160 km/h, in addition to a national high-speed train capable of reaching 225 km/h.
As Turkish news agency Anatolia reported a few days ago, Turkey’s main goal for 2026 is to design and manufacture rail vehicles using its own means and resources, with the aim of increasing the proportion of domestically produced components in key systems. The programme envisages R&D actions in domestic manufacturing capacity and the manufacture of all types of rail vehicles and their subcomponents, as well as maintenance and repair work.
According to published information, the Turkish railway system construction company TÜRASAŞ is already working on the design and creation of several domestic train prototypes to meet the needs of the sector. The first prototype of the high-speed train entirely manufactured in Turkey, with a maximum speed of 225 km/h, will have eight carriages in each set and a total capacity of 584 passengers.
The project of the first high-speed train developed by Turkey is expected to be completed in 2026. Nine domestic electric trains capable of reaching 160 km/h are also under development, in addition to which TÜRASAŞ will also supply 30 domestically produced mainline electric locomotives.
