In an unexpected twist in the twelfth round of the Süper Lig 2025-26, Kocaelispor managed to win 1-0 against Galatasaray at their own stadium, the Turka Kocaeli Stadyumu in the city of Izmit, dealing a heavy blow to the team coached by Okan Buruk, who suffers its first defeat this season.
Although the match started with Galatasaray as clear favourite given its status as leader and its great start to the campaign, Kocaelispor was able to take advantage of its home advantage and closed down well defensively. The key moment that sealed the game came on the stroke of half-time: in the 45th minute, Daniel Agyei scored the only goal of the game when he broke into the box on the right flank and, after easily beating the defence, fired a shot just inside the post past Lions goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır.
Galatasaray tried to impose its game in the second half, but to no avail, struggling to convert chances and to maintain possession at times. Shortly before the final whistle, Osimhen scored in the 82nd minute after a scramble for the ball in the six-yard box, but the referee disallowed it. After consultation with the VAR, it agreed with the referee and concluded that the goal was invalid due to offside… by a matter of centimetres.
The result tooks Kocaelispor’s tally to 14 points, putting it in mid-table and consolidating a day to forget for its opponent. The Kocaeli side had not beaten Galatasaray at its home stadium for 41 years, since 16 December 1984, when Galata also lost 1-0.
Galatasaray, meanwhile, is left with 29 points, suffering its first defeat and making life difficult for itself as league leader, after Fenerbahçe beat Kayserispor 4-2 to move to within one point of the reigning league champions.
