In a thrilling match on matchday 11 of the Turkish Süper Lig at Beşiktaş Stadium, Fenerbahçe staged a spectacular comeback to win the Bosphorus derby 3-2, despite the Black Eagles leading 2-0 in the first half.
Beşiktaş took control of the game from the opening minutes. Only five minutes into the game, El Bilal Touré opened the scoring with a header to put the home side ahead; then in the 22nd minute, Emirhan Topçu extended the lead with a shot in the box after a Fenerbahçe‘s defensive error.
With the score at 2-0, the game seemed to be on track for the team coached by Turkish coach Sergen Yalçın. However, the game changed course when Orkun Kökçü was sent off in the 26th minute for a very harsh tackle on Fenerbahçe’s Mexican player Edson Álvarez; although the referee initially gave a yellow card for the foul, the subsequent VAR review determined that the corresponding penalty should have been a straight red card, which sparked anger in the stands at a time when the prestige and credibility of referees in Turkey is in question.
Comeback and final blow
That was the game changer. Just six minutes later İsmail Yüksek pulled one back from the edge of the six-yard box after a poor clearance by Gökhan Sazdağı, and in stoppage time before the break Marco Asensio levelled the scores with a powerful shot in the box that Ersin Destanoğlu, the home goalkeeper, did not even react to.
After a tense second half in which Beşiktaş was able to contain the Yellow Canaries despite being outnumbered, the match was finally settled in Fenerbahçe’s favour when in the 83rd minute Colombian Jhon Durán, who had entered the field a few minutes earlier, stole the ball after a clumsy control by the home defence and made it 3-2 with a shot to which Destanoğlu, again, did not even react.
This victory has been an important morale booster for Fenerbahçe, who showed character to lift an adverse match on rival territory and take three valuable points in the race for the league title just after the current leader, Galatasaray, drew goalless against Trabzonspor. For Beşiktaş, however, defeat in the Bosphorus derby once again casts serious doubts over their play and sees them temporarily slip back to 6th place in the standings.
