A recent survey published in Turkish media has revealed that watching TV series and films is the favourite pastime of Turks when it comes to occupying their free time. For this small survey, commissioned by the Marketing Türkiye website, 500 Turkish residents over the age of 18 were questioned about their favourite leisure activities both indoors and outdoors.
Interestingly, there were differences between men and women: while men defined entertainment more as a state of happiness, women identified it more with specific activities such as dancing, listening to music or spending time in the company of loved ones.
In terms of activities, watching films or TV series was the activity of choice for 20% of Turkish respondents when it came to how they usually spend their leisure time; listening to music came second (9.6%), while attending festivals was third (7.4%). Other notable activities include arts and crafts (6.7%), painting (5.5%), sports (4.3%), dancing (4.2%), fishing (3.9%), going to the cinema (3.1%) or watching sports competitions/football (2.8%).
Asked about their favourite pastime, the balance tipped even more in favour of movies and TV shows, with 51.2% of Turks pointing to watching TV series and movies on streaming platforms; other top responses were shopping (19.7%), playing sports (19.5%) or reading a book (19.5%). Going to the theatre features prominently in the 35-44 age group, while the 18-24 and 25-34 age groups have a preference for talk shows.
When it comes to spending leisure time alone, watching series and films again repeats as the favourite pastime among Turks with 63.4% pointing to this activity, followed by reading books (31.1%) and listening to music (29.6%). But if the results are segregated by gender, women opt for watching films and series or cooking, while men are more likely to spend their free time alone doing outdoor sports or exploring the nature.
