A long-running court dispute over grazing land between two Turkish villages, Arı and Alakır, has ended with a change in the delineation of the borders between the provinces of Bitlis and Muş, in eastern Turkey.
The dispute was initiated by residents of the village of Arı, located in the Bulanık district of the eastern province of Muş, who filed a lawsuit in court against the village of Alakır, located in the Ahlat district of Bitlis province. After more than two years of a thorough judicial investigation and hearing a large number of witnesses, the court has finally decided to settle the issue by extending the borders of the province of Bitlis by about 500 hectares and reducing the territory of Muş.
Speaking to Turkish media, Muhammet Akif Koçak, the lawyer representing the residents of Alakır village, explained that during the trial the court listened to all sides, including not only the residents of both villages but also those of several nearby villages. ‘We had a good trial. The residents of both Alakır and Arı have respected the decision. The result (the border change between the two provinces) will help farmers a lot, especially in the grazing areas,’ he said.
