Turkish Airlines announced on Friday the cancellation of at least 84 flights following the massive global computer crash that has caused chaos at airports and telecommunications systems around the world, blamed on a Microsoft computer glitch.
‘To avoid any disruption some flights will be cancelled. Our flights will gradually return to normal as soon as possible,’ Yahya Üstun, a spokesman for Turkish Airlines (THY), announced via social media. ‘We are working to reduce our operational intensity to solve the software-related problem that affects many companies from different sectors around the world,’ he added.
According to information published by the Turkish aviation news portal Haber.aero, which has published a list of cancelled Turkish Airlines flights, most of the company’s affected flights are domestic flights and flights to and from destinations in Europe. According to the airline itself, most of the problems are occurring with the ticketing process, as well as during check-in and with reservations.
Turkish Airlines does not rule out that other global connections may be affected due to the closure of airspace in some countries, as a result of the massive computer failure. For its part, Turkish government announced through Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu that it expects to be back to normal ‘within a few hours’, while the Turkish Communications Technology Agency (BTK) confirmed in a statement that the global computer crash was not caused by a cyber-attack, but by a problem with an update of CrowdStrike, a software from a US security firm integrated into Microsoft that blocks malware.
