Turkey has carried out one of the largest naval military exercises in its history, dubbed Mavi Vatan (Blue Homeland), organised simultaneously in the Black Sea, the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, with the aim of demonstrating its operational reach and its deterrent capability in the waters surrounding the country. Furthermore, during the naval exercises, a Bayraktar TB3 drone launched from the Turkish aircraft carrier TCG Anadolu succeeded in destroying a kamikaze unmanned surface vessel, marking the first time that the TB3 has neutralised an unmanned surface vehicle at sea.
The Mavi Vatan 2026 manoeuvres, one of the largest military operations carried out by the Turkish Navy, took place mainly in the Gulf of Antalya, although the exercise was conducted simultaneously across three seas, testing the performance of the Turkish naval forces in various scenarios, ranging from amphibious operations to the destruction of unmanned aerial vehicles using drones deployed from aircraft carriers.
As part of these naval exercises, in addition to navigation and manoeuvring drills, operations were carried out that included: “exiting port under asymmetric threat”, “detection and disposal of drifting mines in the Black Sea”, “mine countermeasure operations in very shallow waters”, “surface firing with rapid-fire guns”, “land bombardment”, “evacuation of non-combatants” and “training in defensive anti-submarine warfare”.
The deployment during the Blue Homeland 2026 manoeuvres involved 120 ships, 50 aircraft and around 15,000 personnel from the Naval, Land, Air and Coast Guard commands. The operation involved, among other assets, an amphibious assault ship, 12 frigates, 4 corvettes, 12 assault craft, 8 submarines, 8 minesweepers, 16 patrol vessels, 20 amphibious landing craft and dozens more small vessels of various types; multiple aircraft also took part, including helicopters, fighter jets and UAVs, according to the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet.
A simulated war scenario on multiple fronts
The Blue Homeland naval exercises are regarded as one of the cornerstones available to Turkey’s naval forces for testing their capabilities in a simultaneous environment, simulating a scenario with multiple fronts and threats. Their coordinated execution in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Black Sea also serves as a message of deterrence by demonstrating Türkiye’s ability to operate across its entire maritime space in a simultaneous and coordinated manner.
Furthermore, “Blue Homeland” not only lends its name to these military exercises, but is also the name given to Turkey’s strategy for establishing its maritime jurisdiction, as well as the country’s energy and geopolitical vision; thus, the naval manoeuvres – organised annually since 2019 – are regarded as a practical application of this strategic doctrine.
