The first aircraft carrier of the Turkish army, the TCG Anadolu, officially began operations on Monday, thus making Turkey one of the 10 countries in the world that currently operates this type of warships. The TCG Anadolu is a multi-purpose amphibious assault ship capable of operating as a light aircraft carrier. It began to be built in 2016 in the Istanbul shipyards, with almost 70% of its components manufactured in Turkey; it is 231 meters long, 32 meters wide and 55 meters high, and displaces 27,436 tons with a top speed of 21 knots; it has an operating range of 9,000 nautical miles, and is capable of operating offshore autonomously for 50 days. Based on the Spanish aircraft carrier Juan Carlos I, it’s the first aircraft carrier in the world to operate primarily unmanned combat aircraft (drones).
