5.6 million tourists visited Istanbul‘s main palaces in 2023, according to data about visits to Turkey’s network of National Palaces and Museums, which welcomed a total of more than 7 million people last year as per the latest figures provided by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The famous Topkapı Palace next to Hagia Sophia, the former seat of the Ottoman sultans and one of Istanbul’s main tourist attractions, was visited in 2023 by 3,474,760 people, while the iconic Dolmabahçe Palace, located on the banks of the Bosphorus and where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk spent his last days, welcomed 1,421,055 tourists last year.
In third place was Beylerbeyi – the only palace on Istanbul’s Asian side – which increased the number of visitors in 2023 to 513,100 thanks to the fact that its gardens are open to the public during the summer until 10pm. Meanwhile, the Küçüksu Pavilion, another jewel of late Ottoman architecture on the banks of the Bosphorus, ranked fourth with 191,105 tourists last year.
