This is the sound of the 6.2 earthquake that shook Istanbul yesterday

The sound of the strong earthquake that shook Istanbul yesterday at midday, leaving more than a hundred people injured and forcing more than 100,000 people to spend the night away from home for fear of another earthquake and in the face of a continuous series of aftershocks in the region, was recorded by seismologists, who for now seem unable to agree on whether the earthquake served to relieve the tension in the Marmara fault or whether, on the contrary, it could be a forerunner of the ‘Big One’ that Istanbul has been expecting for decades.

In statements to Turkish press, Hamdullah Livaoğlu and Erman Şentürk, two experts from Kocaeli University in Turkey, analysed the seismic data obtained from the 6.2 Richter scale earthquake recorded yesterday at 12:49 local time off the coast of the district of Silivri, and then transformed the recorded seismic signal into an audible format: ‘The sound represents energy, which begins as a high-pitched, quiet tone and discharges with a full sound through the main wave, as spectral power density.’

‘An earthquake does not produce sound; the vibration frequencies are assigned and converted into an audible form. The phenomenon of the sound of earthquakes is not a quantitative measure in seismology, but a different manifestation of the seismic waves that propagate from the focus and shake the earth until they reach the ground,’ explained the seismologists.
