Although Gaziantep province was one of those affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey, the Zeugma Museum, one of the largest mosaic museums in the world, appears to have survived the quakes without serious damage, says its director Özgür Çomak: “No damage has been observed in the mosaics or in the structures,” says Çomak, who adds that fortunately there are no fatalities among the staff of the museum, which houses historical jewels such as the famous “Gypsy girl mosaic” (symbol of Gaziantep), or the mosaic of Oceanus and Tethys. There have also been no reports of damage to the rich mosaic collection at the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, a city where 80% of buildings have been severely damaged by the quakes.
