The southeast of Turkey is suffering aftershocks every 3 minutes since the devastating earthquakes of 7.8 and 7.6, which occurred on February 6 with epicenter in the province of Kahramanmaraş and in which 43,556 people have already died, according to Orhan Tatar, head of Turkey’s emergency agency AFAD. Since then, 8,550 aftershocks have occurred: that is, in 17 days the region has suffered the same number of seismic tremors that are normally recorded in 4 months. While most of these quakes are negligible in magnitude, some can reach up to 5 magnitude and collapse buildings damaged by the main quakes. “It is extremely important that people stay away from damaged buildings,” Tatar warned.
