Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu unveiled in public on Friday the 15th-century portrait of Sultan Mehmet II the Conqueror (Fatih Sultan Mehmet), bought in June by the city council at an auction in London for 850,000 euros. Painted in the 15th century by the Italian painter Gentile Bellini, it is one of only three portraits made while the Sultan who conquered Constantinople was alive. “It is a great feeling that this portrait of the Conqueror has returned to Istanbul,” said the mayor, who announced that the painting will be open to view from October 6, on the anniversary of the Turkish forces led by Atatürk reclaiming Istanbul from the foreign invaders.
