The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet will perform for the first time in Istanbul on 7 and 8 June, in a performance that will take place at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall (CRR) in the Turkish metropolis and in which the company, directed by the David Gutiérrez, will present to the public the story of ‘Carmen’ through a show that mixes flamenco, jazz and contemporary ballet.
In this new project, the ballet tackles the ever-present myth of ‘Carmen’, but in this new interpretation of Bizet’s work, new elements of flamenco are added that were previously unknown, so that a whole series of changes are incorporated to reinterpret the original work and adapt the show to the reality of today’s society. This is the main feature that characterises the works directed by Gutiérrez, who with this mixture of flamenco music and ballet, to which is added in this case the story of ‘Carmen’, presents us with a unique and singular show adapted to 21st century audiences.
To do so, the show mixes the most modern flamenco singing with the original music of Bizet’s work, creating a composition that combines the most traditional sounds with innovative touches of jazz. All this as a backdrop to impressive choreographies that fuse the amazing footwork of flamenco dance with the influences of the most innovative modern dance.
Founded in 2017, the Barcelona Flamenco Ballet has already performed in more than 40 countries with impressive staging and high quality shows, in which it collaborates with major symphony orchestras, choirs and soloists from all over the world. This is the first time the company visits Istanbul, taking advantage of the growing passion in Turkey for the art of flamenco and Spanish culture.
