More than 20 stray dogs have been found dead from poisoning in Yozgat, a province in central Turkey, where authorities have opened an investigation into an incident that comes amid a heated debate in Turkey over the reform of the animal abuse law proposed by Erdoğan’s AKP party, which proposes to end the serious problem of the country’s growing stray dog population by resorting to euthanasia.
Turkish media reported that authorities have already launched an investigation into the incident through the public prosecutor’s office; the scene of the incident – located in the Ağızlı area – was attended in person by the mayor of Yozgat, Kazım Arslan, who said that during the preliminary investigation it has been confirmed that more than 20 dogs were killed using a chemical substance that was administered to them through a syringe. The dead animals were dumped en masse in an area on the outskirts of the city.
Following the discovery, the dogs were buried in a mass grave by municipal teams, who will also take care of some 30 surviving puppies and adult dogs, which have already been transferred to a municipal shelter for treatment and care. The governor of Yozgat announced in a statement that he will closely follow the investigation and court proceedings into the killing, and will keep the public informed.
For his part, Arslan expressed his dismay at the poisoning of the dogs in statements to the press: ‘There were also more than 30 puppies in the area, we have taken them to the municipal shelter and taken care of them,’ said the mayor commenting on the macabre discovery. ‘It is impossible to conceive of such an atrocity. We will do our duty as human beings; we will treat these creatures with compassion, and take care of all the puppies,’ he assured.
