The Palestinian group Hamas has proposed a 3-phase, 135-day peace plan to end Israel’s war in Gaza, which has left more than 27,000 Palestinians dead. The plan, which comes in response to a proposal made last week by Qatar and Egypt with US and Israeli backing, proposes a road map with 3 phases of 45 days each, beginning with a truce and the release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas, and continuing with the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the exchange of dead corpses, and the start of reconstruction in Gaza.
The Hamas proposal states that all Israeli women still held by the group, as well as males under the age of 19 and the elderly and sick, would be released during the first 45-day phase; in return, Israel would release some 1,500 Palestinian women and children from its prisons, a third of them life-sentenced.
The remaining Israeli hostages would be released during the second phase of the Hamas-proposed peace plan, while the exchange of bodies and remains of the dead would occur in the final third phase, by the end of which both sides should have already reached an agreement to end the war in Gaza; during the truce, there would be also an increased flow of food and other necessities to help the desperate Palestinian population. It is not yet clear whether Israel – which has so far clearly refused to end the offensive – will accept the Palestinian armed group’s proposal, but when asked about the plan, US President Joe Biden commented that Hamas’s response was “a little over the top”.
