Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the Islamist Hamas group that controls the Gaza Strip, has said that Hamas is willing to create a unity government with the Fatah-led Palestinian National Authority to jointly govern Gaza and the West Bank – an idea that would be strongly opposed by Israel, given that Prime Minister Netanyahu has already said he envisages a post-war scenario in which the Israeli state would regain control of the enclave, including scenarios in which Palestinians would leave Gaza to be hosted by other countries.
“We are open to all national components to democratically rebuild our national reference under the umbrella of the Palestinian National Authority, in addition to agreeing on a national government for the West Bank and Gaza Strip,” the Hamas political leader said in a recorded speech, in which he proposed that the new Palestinian national unity government would control both Gaza and the West Bank. Regarding negotiations with Israel for a ceasefire in Gaza under the mediation of Egypt and Qatar, Haniyeh insisted that there must be a “cessation of the aggression against our people, providing relief to them and responding to their just rights”.
