Turkey’s population grew in 2023 to 85.37 million, according to the latest data released this week by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), which indicates an increase of 92,824 inhabitants last year. In total, 42.73 million of Turkey’s inhabitants (50.1% of the total) are men, while women make up the remaining 49.9% (42.64 million).
The data also show that the annual population growth rate continued to fall in 2023, while the average age of Turkey’s population increased last year to 34 years – up from 33.5 years in 2022 – due to declining fertility and mortality rates. The population of foreigners living in Turkey also decreased by 253,293 to 1.57 million last year.
As for Turkey’s most populous provinces in 2023, Istanbul continued to top the ranking with 15.66 million inhabitants officially registered, although it experienced a decrease by 252,027 from the previous year; it was followed by Ankara with 5.8 million, Izmir (4.5 million), Bursa (3.2 million) and Antalya (2.7 million).
