1 in 4 people in Turkey is under-18s

1 in 4, or to be more exact, 25.6% of the 85.3 million inhabitants that Turkey has, was under 18s at the end of 2022, a figure that represents a slight decrease compared to 22.7 million (26.5%) that represented the youth of the country a year earlier. The young population of Turkey will continue to decline in the coming years, and is expected to drop to 23.3% in 2040, 20.4% in 2060 and 19% in 2080, despite the fact that in 1970 the 48.5% of the inhabitants of Turkey were under 18s, and in the year 2000 they were still 35.2%; even so, Turkey remains well above its EU neighbours, where the average youth population at the end of 2022 was 18.1%: Ireland is the EU country with the youngest population (23.6%), while the lowest rates are found in Italy (15.6%) and Portugal (15.8%).
