At least 15 dead and nearly 400 injured is the provisional death toll of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that has affected Ecuador and Peru, causing damage and the collapse of several buildings in cities such as Machala or Cuenca. The earthquake struck at 12:12 noon local time (18:12 CET) on Saturday, with its epicentre in the Ecuadorian town of Balao, located on the coast near the border with Peru.
Most of the victims have occurred in the El Oro province of Ecuador, where 12 people have died, while two others died in Azuay. For their part, the Peruvian authorities confirmed the death of a 4-year-old girl after the earthquake, which affected the northern region of Tumbes.
