Iraq recalled its ambassador to Tehran on Tuesday and urgently summoned the Iranian foreign attaché in Baghdad following Iran’s missile attacks on the Irbil region of Iraqi Kurdistan early this morning, which killed at least four civilians and injured six others, and which the Iraqi government described as “a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq (…) that endangers the security of the region”.
Early Monday morning, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched at least 11 Kheibar precision missiles at targets in Irbil, which hosts the headquarters of Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) of Iraq, claiming to have attacked “Israeli spy headquarters”. It also launched four missiles at suspected Daesh positions in the Idlib region of northern Syria. However, Baghdad categorically denied that the buildings hit were linked to the Israeli Mossad.
The incident forced the closure of air traffic at nearby Irbil International Airport, which also has a military base with US troops nearby. Iraqi sources confirmed that the Iranian missile strike killed at least four civilians, including well-known Iraqi businessman Peshraw Dizayi and several members of his family. The US has condemned the Iranian attack, which Iraq is threatening to take to the UN Security Council.
