Turkish intelligence sources quoted in the Turkish media say that the Israeli Mossad used fake ads with supposed job offers to recruit people to work as tracers for Palestinians living in Turkey: an information that comes to light following the arrest of dozens of suspects accused of spying for Israel in Turkey, in a joint operation by the National Intelligence Agency (MİT) and the Turkish national police.
Among the 46 suspects identified in total – several of them still at large since they left the country before the raid – were several ’employees’ recruited by the Mossad who were used for ‘tactical tasks’ and for ‘actions against Palestinians living in Turkey and their families‘.
To recruit them, the Mossad used advertisements offering work on social networks and chat rooms, contacted only in writing through messages on Telegram or WhatsApp, and paid through “couriers“, or through wire transfers or cryptocurrencies; these couriers were recruited by the same method: they were told that the money was used for illegal gambling, and were required to be completely discreet. The recruited Mossad “employees” were used for everything, from tracking individuals with photos, videos or even GPS devices placed in their vehicles, to data collection.
In addition to these, the Israeli Mossad recruited other operatives with whom they met in luxury resorts abroad to avoid detection by the Turkish secret services; these ‘recruits’ were subjected to polygraph tests and received money in cash, which they took back to Turkey in special bags to avoid detection at customs.
These Mossad collaborators recruited from abroad were the ones who carried out the most advanced operations in Turkey, having previously received training outside the country in intelligence and secret communication techniques; they were used by the Israeli secret service for tasks such as smuggling people and equipment into Turkey from Iran or Iraq, setting up ‘safe houses’, hiring computer hackers, and even setting up fake companies for intelligence operations.
