This weekend the end of the restoration of the ancient Byzantine monastery of Panagia Keramesta, built in the 14th century by Emperor Alexios III of Trebizond and called in Turkey the “Girl’s Monastery” (Kızlar Manastırı) because it was a monastery for women, was celebrated with a solemn ceremony in Trabzon. The monastery, which today functions as a museum and which took its current shape in the 19th century, consists of several rooms, a chapel and a church, in which inscriptions and portraits of the emperor and his wife Theodora are preserved. After its inauguration, the monastery can be visited for free until October 15.
