The historic Byzantine monastery of Sümela and the Hagia Sophia mosque in Trabzon reopened on Tuesday to tourism again, after a series of restoration works. Sümela, an UNESCO candidate for World Heritage Site, is an Orthodox Christian monastery that began construction in the 4th century dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and since 2010 religious ceremonies have been held there.
