The authorities of the province of Trabzon, in the Turkish region of the Black Sea, have launched a project to build a cable car that will allow tourists to more easily access the historic Byzantine monastery of Sümela. The cable car, which will have a length of 2,500 meters and three stops, will also offer unique views of this monument candidate to World Heritage. Built in the thirteenth century by the Byzantine emperor Alexios III, Sümela stands at 1,300 meters of altitude in a spectacular cut on a cliff above the leafy Altındere Valley.
