Turkey fully reopened to tourists on July 1 the historic Byzantine monastery of Sümela, located in the Trabzon Mountains in Turkey’s Black Sea region, after 5 years of painstaking restoration involving 100 workers, 5 engineers, 30 climbers, 55 technicians and 10 restorers. Candidate to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sümela is an Orthodox Christian monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary that began to be built in the 4th century. Since 2010 it also hosts Christian religious ceremonies.
