Turkey got back to the winning trend in last night’s UEFA Nations League match in the Turkish city of Izmir, scoring a convincing victory over Iceland thanks to a hat-trick from Kerem Aktürkoğlu, with one of the goals coming from a great pass from Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler.
Aktürkoğlu, who only a week ago left Galatasaray to join Portugal’s Benfica, scored the first goal with just a minute played, bringing the entire Gürsel Aksel stadium in Izmir to its feet. With 36 minutes gone, however, Victor Palsson headed in a great goal from a corner kick to level the game for the Icelanders.
In the second half, with the Turks dominating the ball, the 25-year-old striker from İzmit appeared again to put the Turkish team ahead again, when after 51 minutes he scored a beautiful goal from outside the box that brought the whole stadium to its feet. Just seven minutes later, Aktürkoğlu again made his magic but this time the assistant signalled offside.
With just two minutes left on the clock, Arda Güler came on to play a golden pass to Aktürkoğlu, who was virtually alone in front of the goalkeeper to complete his hat-trick. With the win over Iceland, Turkey moves to top of Nations League Group B4 with four points won in two games, having drawn goalless in Cardiff last week against Wales; Wales is in second place with the same points but fewer goals scored, after yesterday’s 2-1 win over bottom-placed Montenegro.
