The terrible tragedy occurred during the weekend in the southern city of Mersin, Turkey, where a fire broke out in a 13-story building in the Viranşehir neighborhood. The fire broke out on the 8th floor where a woman, caught by smoke and flames, stepped out onto the balcony as firefighters tried to reach her with a ladder. Finally, despite the screams of those who witnessed the terrorific scene, the woman jumped to death. The victim, identified as Yasemin Özel, died shortly thereafter in hospital due to the severity of her injuries. Some witnesses criticized the lack of means of the firefighters.
