Last July, Istanbul registered a tourist milestone by welcoming 1.87 million tourists, 6% more than in the same month of 2022, which is also a record for the highest number of visits by foreign tourists in a month in the last decade, according to data from the provincial tourism and culture office, which confirms the recovery of a sector that had seen visits fall to just over 300,000 in 2020 due to the pandemic.
The fact is that the end of the lockdowns has brought a tourism boom: if 2019 was considered a “golden year” for tourism in Turkey, after the end of the coronavirus pandemic even the records set before the global crisis caused by COVID-19 have been broken; in fact, the previous record for the month with the most tourists in the last decade was set until now in 2022: then, also in the month of July, Istanbul welcomed 1.76 million foreign tourists, a figure that had been 1.67 million in the same month of 2019.
