The Beaver Supermoon, the star of the November sky, provided extraordinary images last night after our satellite reached its closest point to Earth. The phenomenon, visible throughout Turkey, offered a spectacle that amazed thousands of people who looked up at the sky last night.
The so-called ‘Full Beaver Moon’ was particularly bright in the skies over central and southern Anatolia, according to Turkish media, where it was clearly visible from many parts of the region. As it coincided with perigee – the point in the moon’s orbit closest to the Earth – the moon appeared larger and brighter than usual, attracting the attention of curious onlookers and astronomy enthusiasts.
The brightness of this supermoon made it possible to capture unique snapshots. Many citizens took advantage of the occasion to photograph it with their mobile phones, although it was the night photographers who obtained the best quality images. Many Turks even chose to gather in open spaces to follow the phenomenon.
The Beaver Supermoon is one of the most popular astronomical events of the autumn. The term apparently refers to the month when beavers traditionally finish preparing their lodges before winter. When it coincides with perigee, as it did last night, the moon can be seen as much as 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon, according to NASA. This increase in apparent size is not an optical effect, but a direct consequence of the shorter distance between the Earth and its satellite.
