Beşiktaş, one of the biggest clubs in the Turkish league, has led one of the biggest shocks of the season after being humbled at the Pendik Stadium in Istanbul by newly promoted Pendikspor, who currently lies second-bottom of the table and in the relegation positions.
Umut Nayir’s goal from the edge of the box just four minutes into the game opened the scoring for the home side, but paradoxically there was no much celebration in Pendikspor’s modest stadium, with barely a bunch of fans present on a cold and rainy afternoon in Istanbul. The rest of the goals of the game came almost in quick succession in the final minutes of the second half, starting with Halil Akbunar‘s 70th minute strike, just two minutes after a Beşiktaş goal was disallowed for offside.
Mame Thiam in the 73rd and Portugal’s Nuno Sequeira in the 81st completed the rout – and the humiliation – for Beşiktaş, who has suffered their worst defeat in more than two years in the Turkish league, and who is showing major shortcomings this season. The Black Eagles have suffered their eighth defeat in the 2023-2024 season, although they remain fourth with 35 points, far behind the 53 accumulated by the leader, Fenerbahçe. A bad start for new Beşiktaş coach Fernando Santos, who suffers his first – and very heavy – defeat.
