Turkish boxer Hatice Akbaş won yesterday the second silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the 54kg women’s boxing category after losing to Chinese rival Chang Yuan 5-0 in the final, earning Turkey’s fifth medal at the Olympics.
Akbaş, who had reached the final after defeating South Korea’s Aeji Im 3-2 in the semi-finals, was congratulated after her success by Turkey’s Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz: “I congratulate our athlete Hatice Akbaş, who returns with a silver medal from her first Olympics, and all those who contribute to sport,” Yılmaz wrote on social networking site X, quoted by the Anatolia news agency. “We are proud of you, Hatice. I wholeheartedly congratulate our national athlete Hatice Akbaş for coming second at the Olympics,” Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Osman Aşkın Bak said for his part.
The 23-year-old Akbaş lamented not winning gold but set her sights on the next Olympics: “It wasn’t my best fight… I was tired, and my opponent was more active and more dynamic. But it’s not bad,” said the Turkish boxer. “I think this medal is a foretaste of the gold medal in Los Angeles 2028. I thank my country and everyone who supported me,” she added.
Hatice Akbaş has won Turkey’s fifth medal at the Paris Olympics and the country’s second silver medal after Yusuf Dikeç’s, nicknamed the “Turkish John Wick”, who has become world famous for his unique casual style, shooting with a calm pose and no special equipment.
