Istanbul’s Disaster Coordination Centre (AKOM) has warned of worsening weather conditions from today and the risk of frost, ice and snowfall over the weekend as temperatures in the city will drop sharply due to the arrival of a new cold snap, which will see temperatures, so far above normal, start to drop this Friday to levels conducive to snow from midnight on Saturday.
According to Turkish media reports in recent hours, weather reports indicate that northerly winds will blow at 20 to 50 km/h in parts of Istanbul from Saturday to Sunday, and that intermittent showers forecast for Saturday could turn to sleet and snow in higher areas from Sunday morning.
From Sunday night onwards, temperatures will drop to just 2 degrees Celsius or below, with precipitation that could turn into locally heavy snow showers. Although a lull in rain is expected from Monday afternoon, showers could recur over the next week.
The severe cold and snowfall in Istanbul between Sunday night and Monday morning could cause problems for land, air and sea transport, therefore citizens and authorities are urged to be extra cautious because of the risk of ice formation.
Meanwhile, the Turkish State Meteorological Directorate has said that the Marmara region will be under the influence of a cold snap from the Black Sea from this afternoon, a situation that will last at least until Thursday 22 January. During this period, “moderate to heavy frost” is expected in inland and elevated areas of Edirne, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, Istanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya and Yalova. In addition, the Interior Ministry has issued a yellow alert for 13 other provinces in central and northern Anatolia for heavy snowfall in these regions of the country.
