Turkey will begin construction this year of a new airport over the sea in the province of Trabzon, on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, the country’s transport and infrastructure minister, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced this week.
The new infrastructure will be built on land reclaimed from the sea and will have a terminal with a capacity for 10 million passengers and a 3,000-metre runway, Uraloğlu said in statements reported by the TRTHaber channel. The minister confirmed that the project is already part of the Turkish government’s investment programme for this year: “We have finalised the investment programme and the tendering process. We are now in the phase of handing over the land, laying the foundation stone and starting excavations,” he said.
Trabzon’s current airport, which has a 2,650-metre runway, already serves more than 3 million passengers a year, but lacks sufficient space to grow. “It is an airport where only aircraft of a certain size can operate. There is no possibility of expansion, neither of the runway nor of the terminal buildings,” stressed Uraloğlu.
The new airport to be built on the sea will be designed to allow wide-body aircraft to land and thus respond to increased tourism demand in the Black Sea region, famous for its landscapes, cultural and historical heritage and iconic sites such as the Byzantine monastery of Sumela, which in 2025 broke a record number of visitors.
Turkey currently has 58 airports, a figure that will rise to 60 with the planned openings of Bayburt-Gümüşhane and Yozgat airports in 2026. Air passenger traffic reached a historic milestone in 2025 by reaching 247 million travellers, while by 2026 it is expected to exceed 260 million passengers, the minister said.
