Turkey has inaugurated its third musical road in the Black Sea region, an original initiative that combines engineering and music to offer drivers a unique driving experience. The new section, located in the province of Trabzon, plays an Ottoman melody when vehicles are travelling at constant speed.
According to the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the system has been installed on the Trabzon-Maçka state highway, where, according to Turkish media reports, drivers who maintain a constant speed of 100 km/h will hear the historic military hymn ‘Ceddin Deden’, an icon of the Ottoman Empire.
Turkish Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu explained that the music is generated by the vibrations and sounds produced by the tyres as they pass over special markings on the asphalt. “The system only works when the driver maintains a constant speed of 100 kilometres per hour,” he said. To achieve optimal sound quality, a smooth, well-paved and straight surface is required, the minister added, stressing that such projects are preferably installed on low-traffic roads around the world to avoid wear and tear and to preserve the clarity of the sound.
Uraloğlu recalled that Turkey inaugurated its first musical road at kilometre 21 of the Nallıhan-Beypazarı highway, north of Ankara, and the second at kilometre 37 of the Ankara-Eskişehir highway; on both of them, Mozart’s famous ‘Turkish March’ can be heard. With the one inaugurated now in Trabzon, there are now three Turkish highways that offer this original way of enjoying music while driving.
