More than 14,000 dead by the earthquakes in Turkey

The number of victims of the earthquakes that have devastated SE Turkey already amount to 14,351 dead and 63,794 injured, according to the latest data released by the AFAD disaster and emergency agency. The two main quakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.6 have affected 13 million people in 10 provinces, destroying 6,444 buildings, and have been followed by at least 1,052 aftershocks, some of magnitude 6.5. According to AFAD, 70,818 emergency tents have been deployed to accommodate survivors, as well as temporary shelters in other buildings with a capacity for 1.2 million people who cannot return to their homes. Although some experts believe that it is possible to find survivors even after a week, cold and time are working against the nearly 100,000 first responders working in the area, 5,000 of them from other countries.
