The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced late yesterday that the EU will organize a donor conference to gather international aid after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Von Der Leyen explained that the conference will be organized in March in Brussels in coordination with the Turkish authorities, to “mobilize funds from the international community in support of the population” of both countries, and that “members of the EU, neighboring countries, members of the UN” and international financial institutions will be invited. The death toll from the earthquakes in both countries now exceeds 17,000, 14,000 of them in Turkey, and is expected to continue rising.
