Istanbul’s foreign population has increased tenfold in the last eight years, according to data presented by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s water management agency, reflecting the arrival not only of Syrian refugees, but also of citizens from other countries such as Russia, Iran or Iraq, many of whom have purchased homes in the Turkish metropolis.
According to Istanbul’s water management agency (İSKİ), some 2.5 million foreign citizens currently live in Istanbul, which would make the city’s foreign population the 9th largest in Europe, with Istanbul already being the 2nd most populous city in Europe with 16 million inhabitants, second only to Moscow. Precisely because of the influx of foreigners, the Turkish authorities are increasing inspections to prevent possible fraud in documentation and registration; for example, İSKİ is obliging foreigners to register only one water supply contract per person, which must coincide with their address of residence.
