Turkish scientists have located a total of eight magma chambers at different depths in the western Turkish province of Manisa, home to Anatolia’s youngest volcanoes, revealing that at least one of them – the largest – is close enough to the surface to erupt in the event of a trigger such as an earthquake.
As reported by the Turkish news agency Anatolia, a total of 12 scientists from several universities installed up to 15 specially designed seismographs in the Kula-Salihli UNESCO Geopark as part of a research project in the region, which resulted in the discovery of up to eight underground chambers filled with magma at depths of between 5 and 30 kilometres below the earth’s surface.
‘In particular, there is a mass of magma that we think provides heat to the geothermal system in this region. We have found that it emerges to the surface from a depth of 5 kilometres,’ said Professor Özgür Karaoğlu, referring to the largest of the magma chambers discovered by the team of scientists.
According to Karaoğlu, there is a risk that the magma chambers they have found could erupt again, taking into account studies on their position, location and proximity. Moreover, given that there are several active tectonic faults throughout western Turkey, experts say that an earthquake could trigger an eruption of magma from one of these chambers, leading to the formation of a new volcano.
