Mount Hasan (Hasan Dağı), a 10,000-year dormant volcano located between Niğde and Aksaray provinces, in the heart of Turkey, could be reactivated and erupting, in light of the latest earthquakes that have shaken the region. At 3,253 meters of altitude and located not far from Mount Erciyes (another dormant volcano), Hasan Dağı last erupted around 7,500 years before Christ, a fact recorded by the first inhabitants of Çatalhöyük. Scientists from the University of Aksaray and experts from the disaster and emergency agency (AFAD), have begun to measure heat emissions and have confirmed that there is activity in the magma layers of the volcano. Now experts wonder if the recent earthquake that struck Konya province, the largest in its history in an area apparently without seismic activity, could have been caused by the volcano, and be a sign that it is waking up again.
