A massive eruption Sunday night of a mud volcano in the Caspian Sea, off the coast of Azerbaijan, caused a huge explosion with flames that reached 100 metres in height. The explosion occurred a few kilometres from Azerbaijan’s 2nd largest natural gas field in the Caspian, although the state company SOCAR reported that its facilities had not been affected. Mud volcanoes are similar to normal ones, but in this case it is water heated in the depths of the earth that abruptly emerges, mixed with rocks and gases. It is estimated that almost half of the world’s recorded mud volcanoes are located in Azerbaijan.
