Istanbul has more inhabitants than Belgium, Greece or Austria. Other populated cities in Turkey are Ankara, İzmir, Bursa and Antalya.
Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, has more inhabitants than 75 countries in the world, even though its population has decreased in the last year due to factors such as the coronavirus pandemic, according to a study presented by the Interior Ministry of the Eurasian country.
According to the population map prepared by the Address Registration System, the province of Istanbul had 14.8 million inhabitants in 2020: a figure that in 2021 would have been reduced by some 600,000 people. The report does not explain the cause behind this unusual decline in the population of the Turkish metropolis, although it is believed that it could be due to the exodus of large cities that many Turks have carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic.
After Istanbul, the most populous provinces in Turkey are Ankara (5.45 million inhabitants), İzmir (4.30 million), Bursa (3.06 million) and Antalya (2.44 million). The last places on the list are occupied by Kilis (138,632 inhabitants), Ardahan (94,586), Tunceli (88,534) and finally Bayburt – in northeastern Anatolia – with only 78,324 residents.
Despite this unusual population decline, the Bosphorus metropolis still has more inhabitants than 75 countries around the world, including European states such as Belgium (11.5 million), Greece (10.4 million), Austria (9 million) or Switzerland (8.6 million).
