Galatasaray was the convincing winner over arch-rivals Fenerbahçe in last night’s derby in Istanbul on Matchday 6 of the Turkish Super League, keeping the Lions at the top of the Süper Lig for another round and moving five points away of their rivals.
The first goal of the game came in the 20th minute, when Lucas Torreira‘s shot from outside the box hit the post and then Fenerbahçe’s goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic and into the net. Just seven minutes later, Dries Mertens increased the lead to 0-2 with a fine strike off a pass from Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
In the second half, Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara made it 0-3 after 59 minutes after a play with Torreira. The only goal for the Yellow Canaries came four minutes later after the referee awarded a controversial penalty for an alleged foul on Fred in the box, with Edin Dzeko taking the spot-kick.
Mourinho’s anger after the game
After the game, Fenerbahçe coach Jose Mourinho was visibly angry at the result. ‘We started fast and dominated, but it doesn’t matter. After 1-3 we risked everything, but it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter all the chances we missed. I don’t think Galatasaray played much better than us, but they made better use of their chances, and we didn’t,’ said the Portuguese coach, who declined to give a press conference and left the stadium.
Okan Buruk praised the attitude of his players and the support of the Galatasaray fans during the match at the Ülker Stadium: ‘Victories in derbies are important, but a victory against Fenerbahçe is even more important. Both teams did a good job. It was a good night for us,’ he said.
With this important win in the Istanbul derby, Galatasaray remains unbeaten in the Turkish league and top the standings with 18 points, five ahead of Fenerbahçe, who has also seen its long 32-game unbeaten run in the competition come to an end.
