Galatasaray was crowned Turkish league champions once again on Sunday after an easy win in Konya thanks to goals from Argentina’s Mauro Icardi and Berkan Kutlu, thus ending a record-breaking season that was ultimately decided on the final matchday.
Despite the outstanding efforts by Fenerbahçe, who last week looked closer to snatching the coveted title from Galatasaray thanks to its victory in the derby, and who on Sunday completed a 6-0 thrashing of Süper Lig bottom team İstanbulspor, the Yellow Canaries were, however, dependent on a Galata slip-up in Konya that finally did not happen, and the Lions easily beat the Anatolian team with two goals from Icardi in the 29th and 51st minutes, and a third from Berkan Kutlu two minutes later, while Konyaspor’s only goal came from Denmark’s Louka Prip 12 minutes before the end.
Galatasaray thus brought a historic season to a close, with Okan Buruk‘s team recording an impressive 102 points from 33 wins and just two defeats, winning 18 of their 19 matches at home, but above all going on a 17-match unbeaten run, the longest in the history of the Turkish Super League.
Buruk himself has also broken several records at the helm of Galatasaray, being already the most successful coach in the club’s history with 10 titles to his name, and the second coach in the Turkish league to win the league with two different teams, something only achieved so far by Mustafa Denizli. Another protagonist has been the Lions’ Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who has now won 17 trophies since joining the Turkish club in 2011, today’s being his 7th league title.
Today is undoubtedly a great day for Galatasaray and their fans for winning the title and confirming their dominance of the Turkish league; but mention must also be made of Hatayspor, a club that suffered particularly badly during the earthquake that struck Turkey a year ago – their manager and a player were killed in the quake – to the point that there was even speculation about a possible dissolution of the team. In the end, the club has played this season and, although it has not been easy, will remain in the first division for another year (and that’s five in a row) after beating Rizespor and thanks to the defeat of Ankaragücü, which will play next season in the second division. Tebrikler Hatay!!
